The Irish in Europe Project provides an interactive repository for data collected in completed research projects and acts as a support for current and projected research initiatives.

With assistance from the IRCHSS, the Irish in Europe Project currently hosts four searchable biographical databases:

  • The French military database includes 16,000 biographical entries on Irish infantry in French service in the eighteenth century, drawn from regimental inspection records (contrôles de troupes) housed at the Archives de l’Armée de Terre in Vincennes, near Paris. Read more
  • The Spanish military database includes over 15,000 biographical entries on Irish soldiers in Spanish service in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, drawn from a various sources in the Archivo nacional at Simancas and elsewhere. Read more
  • The Louvain student database includes over 1,200 biographical entries on Irish students in the University of Louvain in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, drawn mainly from university records in Belgium. Read more
  • The Paris and Toulouse student database contains over 1,500 biographical entries on Irish students in the Universities of Paris and Toulouse in the early modern period, drawn principally from university records in Paris and Toulouse. Read more
